About David

David Burrowes

David Burrowes is a cellist & cello teacher living in Cambridgeshire.

He held the post of Principal Cello for the London production of 'The Phantom of the Opera' from 1998-2020. He is currently Principal Cello of  Southern Pro Musica.

David has appeared as guest Principal Cello with many orchestras in London, including the London Mozart Players and City of London Sinfonia and has also played extensively with the Philharmonia and Royal Philharmonic Orchestras.

As a Chamber music player, he is cellist of the Cirrus Quartet. Amongst his solo recording credits are a CD of the Brahms Double Concerto with Rolf Wilson on violin,  and a recent CD of music for cello and piano from the Irish Celtic Revival with Peter Foggitt.

Alongside his playing career, David has had a distinguished record as a teacher of both cello and chamber music.

From 2010-2017 he was Director of Pro Corda's annual cello course, where he taught and performed alongside cellists of the calibre of Alexander Baillie, Raphael Wallfisch, Julian Lloyd Webber, Joely Koos and Michal Kaznowski.

In addition, he has taught at both the Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and has coached on cello courses for the Ulster Youth Orchestra, the Kent County Youth Orchestra and European Youth Summer Music.

Teaching Posts

1991-2010: Head of Strings at the Kent Music Academy, Maidstone. Conducting the orchestra, coaching quartets and cello teaching.

1996-2011: Head of Music Performance at Dartford Grammar School. Conducting the orchestra, coaching quartets and cello teaching.

2000-present: Associate Lecturer in cello at the University of Surrey. Cello teaching and running cello sectionals for the university orchestra.

2007-present: Director of Music Enrichment at Beths Grammar SchoolDirecting the orchestra and coaching chamber groups.

2010-present: Director of Chamber Music at Coloma Convent Girls' School, Croydon. In both of the above posts, he plays piano with many of the groups.

2010-2017: Course Director for the annual Pro Corda Cello Course. Planning and administering the course, coaching cello ensembles, taking masterclasses and conducting the cello orchestra.

2022-present: New Hall School. Teaching cello and chamber music.
